ORI Numbers: What They Are and Why They Matter

An ORI helps route a fingerprint-based submission to the right requesting organization. Confirm the exact identifier and purpose with the agency rather than using a universal list.

The useful takeaway

Treat the ORI as case-specific routing information: copy it exactly from the requesting agency and ask before changing anything.

01

A routing identifier, not a universal code

An ORI, commonly called an Originating Agency Identifier, is used in many fingerprint-based processes to identify the organization or program receiving a submission. The important practical point is that the right identifier depends on who requested your screening and why it was requested, not simply on your job title or location.

Two people visiting the same provider can need different routing information because their employers, boards, schools, or applications differ. A fingerprinting provider may enter information supplied by the requesting agency, but should not be expected to select an unknown ORI for you.

02

How to confirm the right one

Look for the ORI in the agency’s current instructions, application portal, referral email, or official form. If you cannot find it, contact the agency’s licensing, hiring, admissions, or screening contact and ask for the exact characters, including any punctuation or leading letters and numbers.

Do not borrow an ORI from a friend, an old application, or an online list unless the requesting agency confirms it applies to your case. Save the response with your other application notes, because a small routing mistake can send a submission down the wrong administrative path.

03

Questions for the provider

When contacting a provider, explain the requesting agency and the service format the agency named, then read the ORI exactly as supplied. Ask the provider to confirm what information they need at the appointment without transmitting your full sensitive details in an insecure message.

Live Scan Fingerprinting’s official service information and the FDLE registered-provider resource provide background about available fingerprinting services and registered providers. They do not create a universal ORI directory or determine your agency’s requirements, so the requesting organization remains the source to follow.

A practical starting point

Your preparation list

Keep these prompts for your own use. There is nothing to submit here.

  • Find the ORI in the current agency instruction or official portal.
  • Copy the identifier carefully and compare each character before submission.
  • Ask the requesting agency to confirm any unclear or conflicting ORI.
  • Keep the agency response with your application and transaction notes.
When you want clarity

Questions to ask a professional

  1. Can you confirm the exact ORI for my screening purpose and application?
  2. Does this ORI match the format and recipient shown in your current instructions?
  3. What should I do if the ORI I received differs from an older form?
